Jane grew up in Rossland and has attended the Academy, on the Alpine Team, since grade 9. In 2013, Jane won the U14 provincials and placed 4th at the Whistler Cup. Jane continues to attend the Academy Alpine Program.

Why did you join the Academy?: “The school is much more flexible, so it allows me to focus on ski racing and still be where I need to be in my school work.”
Who are your favourite skiers?: “My favourite skiers are Tina Maze, Marie-Michele Gagnon and Ted Ligety. I admire these people because they are such amazing skiers, and they also seem like really nice people.”
What would you say to someone thinking of joining the Acaedmy?: “I would highly recommend joining the Academy to any skier who loves the sport and wants to spend more time out on the slopes.”
Vasily took a break from the Russian National Team to attend the Academy Alpine Program for the 2012/2013 season. Upon his return to the Russian National Team, he placed 3rd in slalom at the Internationls in Sweden, 1st in slalom and 3rd in giant slalom at the Nationals in Russia.

Why did you join the Academy?: “I joined the Academy because I wanted to improve my skiing and English, and the Academy gave me this opportunity.”
What is your favourite memory of the Academy?: “My best memory, I guess, is when we went camping with the Academy and lived in a tent.”
Who are your favourite skiers?: “Ted Ligety, because he makes it looks easy and that everything in our hands.”
Sally grew up in Rossland and attended the Academy, on the Freeski Team, until her graduation in 2013. In 2012 Sally placed 3rd Overall in IFSA, 1st at Snowbird North American Championships, 1st at Red Mountain Canadian Open, 1st at Lake Louise Junior Big Mountain Challenge, and 2nd at Crystal Mountain Junior Freeski Comp. In 2013 she placed 3rd Overall in IFSA, 2nd in North American Championships, 1st at Red Mountain Canadian Open, 1st at Lake Louise Junior Big Mountain Challenge, and 1st at Whitewater Junior Freeski Comp. Upon graduation, Sally received a full academic scholarship to the University of Calgary, and is now completing her Engineering Degree.

What is your favourite memory of the Academy?: “I have too many wonderful memories of the Academy to name a single one as my favourite. Overall, the like minded people that I met through training and competing are the most wonderful aspect of the Academy. They allowed me to form memories while I was still competing, and the connections that I have maintained since leaving the Academy have allowed me to continue to make great memories.”
Why did you join the Academy?: “I joined the Academy because it gave me the opportunity to be a dedicated student, as well as ski and compete at a high level. The Academy made it so I didn’t have to compromise, and could continue to pursue all of my passions.”
Who are your favourite skiers?: “Leah Evans – Leah started skiing with me when I was 12 and was just starting to compete to help encourage me and see my progress. Since then she has continued to grow her company, Girls Do Ski, and inspire young girls to get into skiing, as well as skiing some of the sweetest lines around.”

Soleil grew up in Rossland and has been part of the Red Mountain Academy Alpine Team since grade 8. During the 2013/2014 season Soleil came back from missing over a month of training due to injury to become the U16 overall Provincial Champion of 2014.

Why did you join the Academy?: “I joined the Academy because I have always been driven to make the most of my sport, the Academy has helped me get the training I need to achieve my goals in the alpine ski racing world. The fact that I can both ski five days a week and get all my school work done is really awesome!”
What is your favourite memory of the Academy?: “I don’t have a specific memory, but I really love to be around people that enjoy the same things I do.”
What would you say to athletes who are thinking of joining the Academy?: “I would say that it’s a great way of meeting people from around the country and internationally, the Academy in Rossland is great because everybody in the community is like-minded and very active. Personally I have had an amazing opportunity of becoming great friends with a German exchange student and this lead me to visiting her in Germany this summer, and learning some of the language and a very enriching experience.”
Who are your favourite skiers?: “One of my favourite skiers would be Slovenian skier Tina Maze, because of her skiing. She is an excellent all discipline racer, she is aggressive and confident. Somebody I look up to for perseverance would be Canadian skier Larisa Yurkiw, even though Larisa was not accepted onto the national team because of injury she pushed and made it to the Sochi Olympics, I think she is a great role model for anyone who wants to go far in this sport.”

Sabrina attended the Academy as part of the snowboard team for her graduating year and then moved on to ride for the BC Freestyle Team. She placed in the top 15 on the Canadian ranking in 2013 and placed in the top 10 at an international event during the 2013/2014 season.

What is your favourite memory of the Academy?: “Capture the flag at the retreat to the Slocan Valley with everyone from the Academy, and all the pow days at Red Mountain.”
Why did you join the Academy?: “I joined because I always wanted to get into park riding and compete on my snowboard.”
Who are your favourite riders?: “Leanne Pelosi, Hanna Beaman and Helen Schettini. I look up to them a lot because they push women’s snowboarding in the backcountry and have sick style.”

Johann (Hansi) Schwaiger
Hansi trained and competed with the Academy FIS racing team over the 2010/2011 season. During his time with the Academy he improved his scores sufficiently to be accepted to the German Junior Development Team upon his return to Germany.

Why did you join Red Academy?: “I wanted to do an exchange year but didn’t want to stop ski racing. My mum and I were looking for a school / academy that also has a racing team. After long research we found Red Mountain Academy to be the most suitable ski academy.”
What is your favourite memory of the Academy?: “I don’t have anything special because I really liked pretty much every day, everyone and everything. I loved training at Red Mountain with the athletes and coaches.”
What would you say to athletes who are thinking of joining the Academy?: “I would recommend them to join the Academy because it’s a great experience and it’s really fun. The Academy has very good and nice coaches as well as athetes and not to forget an awesome mountain.”
Who are your favourite skiers?: “Ted Ligety, Didier Cuche and Carlo Janka.”
Miles attended the Academy as part of the snowboard team for 3 years. The experience and training he received with the Academy helped him qualify to train and compete with the BC Freestyle Team in Whistler, BC.

What is your favourite memory of the Academy?: “The Whistler Trip.”
What are your plans after graduation?: “I plan on being a pro snowboarder.”

Tommy and Mitch Pitman
Tommy and Mitch, twin brothers, grew up in Rossland with Red Mountain Resort as their stomping grounds. They both attended the Academy as part of the snowboard team from grades 10-12. The extra time the Academy allowed them to spend on the hill helped them improve their skills significantly. Tommy and Mitch currently compete as part of the National Junior Development Team in SBX and the BC SBX Team. They placed first and second in J2 category – 17 and under at the Junior Nationals in April 2010 and were 2 of the 4 athletes chosen to represent Canada at the Jr. World Competition in New Zealand in August 2010.
Tommy and Mitchs’ mom (Valerie Pitman) was recently quoted as saying; “We are very proud and know that they would not have been this successful if they had not had the opportunity to spend all that time on the snow. The Academy has given them great opportunities and I think this is a wonderful testament as to how successful the program can be.”
Why did you join Red Academy?: “So we could spend most of the winter on a snowboard.”
What is your favourite memory of the Academy?: “Road trips with the team and boggin around in the mega cab with the boys.”
What would you say to athletes who are thinking of joining the Academy?: “It’s a great opportunity to do what you love.”
Who are your favourite snowboarders?: “Miles always gets us pumped and anyone else who gets us excited to go snowboarding.”
Una graduated the Academy as a member of the FIS racing team in 2011. Upon graduation she moved on to compete, on scholarship, with Montana State University.
